Over the past decade, the Florida Problem Solving & Response to Intervention (PS/RtI) Project and the Florida Positive Behavior Support: A Multi-Tiered Support System (FLPBS: MTSS) Project have emerged as similar systems change approaches aligned with the goals of NCLB, IDEIA, and related school improvement policies. Both projects promote preventative, evidence-based practices in general and special education settings, and both projects encourage the establishment of a multi-tiered system of supports for all students allocated through a need-driven, problem-solving process.The mission of the collaborative partnership between PS/RtI and FLPBS: MTSS Projects is to
- Enhance the capacity of all Florida school districts to successfully implement and sustain a multi-tiered system of student supports with fidelity in every school;
- Accelerate and maximize student academic and social-emotional outcomes through the application of collaborative data-based problem solving utilized by effective leadership at all levels of the educational system; and,
- Inform the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of an integrated, aligned, and sustainable system of service delivery that prepares all students for post-secondary education and/or successful employment within our global society.
It is hoped that by the two projects modeling an integrated and collaborative partnership for promoting the “whole child” at the state level similar efforts and practices will be demonstrated at the district and school levels.
